MorningStar Farms Corn Dog

As I continue my series of MorningStar Farms products, I bring you bad tidings.  I have yet to find a way for a veg-head to enjoy a corn dog.  If you’ve been following my MorningStar posts you’ll see that I’ve been raving about their products but alas all good things must come to an end.  I first sampled a MorningStar corn dog a few years ago and swore them off for life.  As I perused mornignstarfarms.com for my next product to buy and review I thought it was only fair to show their “darker” side.

Now, I’ve never tried a real corn dog so I must proceed with the disclaimer that I may not be a corn dog fan in general.  But then again I’ve never met a meat-eater who didn’t like a good ol’ fashioned corn dog.  I’ll start from the inside and work my way out with this one.  First of all: the stick.  I may have had a faulty stick but by the time I had heated up my corn dog it was sagging already.

Next, the dog.  It was chewy and bland and quite frankly a bit nauseating.  Finally, the “corn.”  To be completely honest I think I must have blocked this part out of my mind.  I’ve never been too happy outside of my comfort zone and this was WAY outside of my comfort zone.  All I can remember is a mouth-full of what I can only describe as thick, soggy cotton. Yuck!

Keeping in mind that MorningStars Farms has set such a high standard for their foods I have to give their corn dogs and absolute ‘Bleh!!!!!!’

Canada Dry Ten

I have to admit, when I first heard about the Ten series that sodas were putting out I was a bit skeptical.  Why not just drink diet soda if there’s only ten calories and two grams of sugar? Or if you don’t mind the calories and sugar why not drink a regular of your favorite brand and enjoy it for what it’s worth?  It didn’t make sense to me.  But when I was shopping at my local Winn-Dixie yesterday and saw mini bottles of Ten sodas I figured “what the heck,” and decided to give it a try knowing that we were doing a review series on them for the site.

When I got my goodies home I decided to start with Canada Dry Ten Ginger Ale. I’ve had both diet and regular versions of this delicious drink and figured I could present a pretty informed opinion.  I was genuinely surprised by what I discovered.  The flavor was wonderfully crisp and lacked any syrupy stickiness that drives me away from sugar-filled sodas.  And with only 10 calories I feel less guilt.

I must admit though that I still prefer diet soda.  Ten sodas taste quite the same as diet sodas so I don’t see why I should ingest 10 extra calories and 2 grams of sugar.  I have to give Ginger Ale Ten a “Meh!”

MorningStar Farms Sausage Links

If you follow The Consumer’s Corner’s daily blog posts, you’ll know by now that I am a huge MorningStar Farms fan.  I love their protein rich foods, the tasty, distinct flavors and the ease of tossing them in the microwave with the same results as throwing them on the grill.  Most people know that MorningStar Farms makes (delicious) veggie burgers, and if you’ve read my other posts you know that they make microwavable meals, but not many people know the full scope of all the MorningsStar Farms products.  Today’s topic? Veggie sausage links.

These links are absolutely scrumptious.  The sausage links have a slight kick to them that I hear regular sausages possess.  With 82% less fat than pork sausage (that’s only three grams per serving!) and 80 calories they’re a great breakfast food that will fill you up without giving you that groggy, bloated feeling that I find eating too much in the morning can give me.  Have I not convinced you to try the links for breakfast?  My mum taught me another great way to eat them.  Sandwich style.  Personally, I cut the link in half long-ways and lay them between two slices of bread with a little (okay a lot) of ketchup.  However you want to try these, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Meat eaters and vegetarians alike will love MorningStar Farm’s sausage links.  Interested in trying them? Simply go to https://www.morningstarfarms.com/products/breakfast/sausage-links and type your zip code into the ‘where to buy’ box and voila! You have sausage! Certainly a ‘Yea!’ from me!

Skittles Darkside

Skittles is going all Star Wars on us. That’s right, it’s the new Skittles Darkside, ‘The Other Side Of The Rainbow’, and boy are they delicious. Darth Vader would be proud.   As a hard core Skittles fan I was ecstatic to see this new brand extension of awesomeness at my local Walgreens as I purchased half the candy isle and some ice cream.  Don’t judge me.  With flavors including Forbidden Fruit, Blood Orange, Pomegranate, Dark Berry and Midnight Lime you can’t go wrong.  While all the flavors are delectable I’d have to call the Blood Orange my favorite–I could eat them by the handful.

These dark, delicious morsels are a little bit sweet, a little bit tangy, and a whole lot of yummy. One thing that I always consider when trying multi-flavored candies is not only do they taste good alone but do they taste good in a dark movie theatre when I grab a random handful.  They complement each other beautifully and create a cornucopia of lovely flavors.  I dare say, I like them more than any other product Skittles has but out yet.

Whether you’re going to the movies or just going on a candy binge Skittles Darkside are a must-have.  Big “Yea!”

MorningStar Farms Mediterranean Chickpea Veggie Burger

MorningStar Farms has done it again–this time with their new Mediterranean Chickpea veggie burger.  In a word: delicious.  I was a little skeptical when I first picked this up at my local Winn-Dixie because I tend to be a bit of a picky eater, but I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised.  Right now I’m teaching myself how to cook “grown-up” foods using the oven and stove instead of microwaving everything, but let me tell you, I can throw these burgers in the microwave for a minute and fifteen seconds and I couldn’t tell the difference had it been grilled.  The burger wasn’t soggy or flimsy post-microwave but quite firm and tasted great between some oatmeal bread with a little bit of ketchup.  Ketchup, I know, not most people’s first choice for a Mediterranean dish, but MorningStar Farms’ website offers recipes for yoghurt lemon sauce, cilantro avocado spread and more.

One thing that I love about these burgers is that when they say Mediterranean Chickpea they don’t mess around.  The burgers a stuffed with whole chickpeas and will meet you with a beautiful aroma Mediterranean flavors.  So far I haven’t found any other popular veggie burger brands that offer a Mediterranean option and even if they did, I’m not convinced that they could top MorningStar Farms’ brand.  For those of you who are looking at this meat alternative for health reasons you’ll be happy to know that each burger has 70% less fat than ground beef and only 110 calories per serving.  Will you notice the flavor difference?  No worries there!

So whether you’re looking for a new vegetarian grilling (or microwaving) option or just love Mediterranean food you will not be disappointed.  Have to give this burger a big ol’ “Yea!”

MorningStar Farms Lasagna with Sausage-Style Crumbles

MorningStar Farms’ Lasagna with Sausage-Style Crumbles is one of MorningStar Farms’ entrées that was new to me and as a dedicated MorningStar food fan, I was surprised this one had slipped past me. When I saw it at my local Walmart I had to snatch it up.  With 42% less fat than the leading frozen lasagna entrée, 270 calories per serving and 20g of protein that I desperately need as a pescatarian I thought this would be a definite “Yea!”. MorningStar Farms rarely disappoints me but unfortunately this meal didn’t quite do it for me.

MorningStar Farms advertises their lasagna as,

“Layers of veggie sausage crumbles, noodles, cheese, tender vegetables and zesty marinara sauce.”

So here’s where my complaints begin. Veggie sausage crumbles? I saw none in my meal. Obviously defective. I buy their veggie sausage crumbles alone to cook into pasta sauce so I knew what I was looking for and what I was looking forward to.  Was I let down? Yes, yes I was. Onto the noodles. I was really looking forward to soft tender noodles (I tend to be quite the pasta fan), and to be fair maybe this was my fault, I did microwave  instead of using the oven, but the noodles were a bit tough. As far as the cheese and zesty marinara sauce go I have no complaints. Not too much, not too little. But the veggies? I think I had maybe three pieces of zucchini the size of my thumbnail. Jeremy would love this. Me? Not so much. Sigh.

I have to say, this was edible but it certainly didn’t make my top 5 favorite MorningStar Farms foods.  I’ll give it a “Meh…”

Cirque du Soleil – Saltimbanco

The music from Cirque du Soleil’s show “Saltimbanco” is hauntingly animalistic, ranges from gentle persuasive notes to predatory tones to cathedral-esque vocals.  No matter which way you spin it “Saltimbanco” is an anthem to human creativity.  The absolutely gorgeous mix of tones, instruments and vocals make this album playful, sometimes ominous and always entertaining.  As far as soundtracks go, this may be my favorite yet, and I’ve listened to a LOT of soundtracks.

The made-up language that supports the vocals may sound off-putting in theory but once you listen to it, I guarantee you’ll find it to be relaxing, almost hypnotic and trace-like.  With influences ranging from African and French to Spanish and Native American “Saltimbanco” is widely accessible to any listener.  The incredible compilation of music narrates a story of adventure that will take you back to your childhood while simultaneously propelling you into a new world.

“Saltimbanco” is epic if nothing else and will take you on an incredible journey.  Cirque du Soleil has become a household name, widely known for brilliant circus performances, and with that comes magical music.  Whether you’re a devoted fan  or if Cirque is new to you, “Saltimbanco” is a fabulous place to start.  I dare say this is a “Yea!” and a half.

Werther’s Original Sugar Free Caramel Cinnamon Hard Candies

Okay, let’s take a quick poll here. Do you love caramel? Yes! Do you love cinnamon? You do?! What about something that is flavored so closely to a cinnamon bun that texture is the differentiator?  Okay if you’re palate doesn’t mesh well with deliciousness stop reading here. Are you still with me? I would like to introduce Werther’s Original Sugar Free Caramel Cinnamon Hard Candies.  What a mouthful (and I’m not just talking about the name).  These individually wrapped hard candies fill your mouth with a soft cinnamon flavor that is more like a cinnamon sugar than a burn your mouth, make you cough straight-up cinnamon powder.  The classic caramel taste that Werther’s is known for has not been messed with whatsoever: mouth-watering, smooth and oh-so sweet.

But here’s the thing that usually scares people off, the magic words “sugar free.”  Many people believe these words are reserved for dieters and diabetics who are already assumed to have to sacrifice.  But put your worries aside, these tasty morsels are a far cry from the mainstream sugar-free odd tasting bunch of candies.  Had I been blindfolded I would have never guessed these little guys were sugar-free.

So, in conclusion, I am happy to report that these candies, whether you suck ‘em or chew ‘em, or are a highly praised “Yea!”

MorningStar Farms

I have been a pescatarian since the day I was born.  I’ve never had a hamburger, never cut into a steak or visited many popular fast-food joints.  Call my family crazy, but that’s just how I was raised and at this point in my life I see no need to change that.  One of the first questions I get when people find out I’ve never had meat, they usually ask me what I do eat, how I get my protein and what on earth my mother was thinking when she signed me up for a life without meat.

My answer? Morningstar Farms!  This is a vegetarian (and often vegan) food company that makes meat substitute products.  They make soy vegetarian hamburgers, sausage, lasagna, chick’n and about a dozen other foods.  Thoroughly delicious, Morningstar Farms food looks exactly like real meat and from what I’ve heard tastes quite convincingly like the real thing.  And they’re not just for the vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian group either.  Many dieters love Morningstar Farms because their products have around 75% less fat and many calories fewer than meat.  And you know what? Some people eat it because it just tastes great!

So whether you eat a meatless diet and you’re looking for a new food or you just want to shake up your meals Morningstar Farms is the way to go! Definite “Yea!”

Thin Mint Girl Scouts Candy Bar

Girl Scout cookies on the go, anyone?  Yes, please!  The new limited edition Thin Mint Girl Scouts Candy Bars are convenient, enticing and oh-so delicious. I tried the Thin Mint inspired bar and fell in love (don’t tell my fiancée!)  Nestle has combined the gorgeous mint flavor with milky chocolate and the new Crunch element that makes me want to sing a Hallelujah Chorus.  I promise even the purist old-school Girl Scout cookie fan will enjoy this new twist on the classic cookie.  Do I sound a little over-enthused? Try one and you will be too, I dare you!

The bars are perfectly portioned and scored across the middle I’m assuming with the intention of being able to have a few bites now and save the rest for later.  But let me tell you, no Nestle Crunch Girl Scouts Candy Bar of mine will make it to a second serving.  The individually wrapped bars will leave you satisfied and binge-free.  Take it from me, the girl who can go through cookies like there’s no tomorrow, this is a good thing…a very good thing.

The only drawback as far as I’m concerned is that these babies are hard to find.  I scoured a Walgreens, Winn-Dixie and Walmart before aforementioned fiancée spotted a lone bar at our local CVS.  Hopefully with time these bars will become more and more popular  and they’ll be easier to find, because in my book, they are a definite “Yea!”
