Ben & Jerry’s Truffle Trifecta

I’m a budget shopper, so when I’m craving some cold, creamy confections I tend to skip past the pricier name brands, and their tiny containers. Set me up with a half-gallon of store-brand vanilla, some chocolate syrup, and I’m pretty darn happy. Last week I was browsing the freezer of my local Walgreens, and noticed a buy one, get one free deal on Ben & Jerry’s. I scanned over the list of flavors, and curiosity got the better of me. Before I could say ‘Phish Food,’ I had a container of it and ‘Truffle Trifecta’ in my shopping cart.

Truffle Trifecta is a variety of B&J’s exclusive to Walgreens stores, so I hope you have one in your area, or you’re going to miss out on some amazing ice cream. Truffle Trifecta has a base of milk chocolate ice cream, and dime/penny sized chocolate truffles. The filling in those liberally placed truffles is marshmallow, fudge, and my absolute favorite, caramel. When you bite in to that nugget of golden, buttery yumminess, it is an amazing flavorful experience. The contrast with the chocolate ice cream is so…. right. That’s the only way I can describe it.

Should you be able to afford the premium price, or you only indulge on occasion, I highly recommend Ben & Jerry’s Truffle Trifecta. It gets an easy ‘Yea!’

Doritos Dinamita Chile Limon

Lime. Hands down it may be my favorite flavor additive to any given product. I like lime candy, lime soda, lime pie, lime vodka, I season my food with powdered lime seasoning. You might could say that I am a bit lime obsessed. I wouldn’t argue that point. So when I received the blessing opportunity to review Doritos Dinamita Chile Limon, I was very much thrilled.

After the glorious experience I had taste testing Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso, and knowing that Dinamita Chile Limon had a lime component, I just knew that a ‘Yea!’ rating was a forgone conclusion, and my review would be one giant piece of Dorito propaganda. Ladies and gentleman, when I’m wrong, I say I’m wrong. In this case, my expectations were quite a ways off.

Lime was only used as a tool to make these snacks bitter, none of the festive fruit notes were able to punch their way through the incredibly dominant wall of chile pepper flavoring. Doritos really went for heat as the primary flavor here, and on that front, they succeeded. Where they failed was not offering any kind of balance. Also, it took a Clorox wipe to get the bright red coloring off of my fingers; they did not skimp on the amount of seasoning.

These are going in the ‘Meh…’ category from me. They were not what I expected, but I did like them enough to finish the bag. I can see where someone might really enjoy them, but that ‘someone’ wasn’t me, and I won’t be a repeat buyer.

Skittles Darkside

Skittles is going all Star Wars on us. That’s right, it’s the new Skittles Darkside, ‘The Other Side Of The Rainbow’, and boy are they delicious. Darth Vader would be proud.   As a hard core Skittles fan I was ecstatic to see this new brand extension of awesomeness at my local Walgreens as I purchased half the candy isle and some ice cream.  Don’t judge me.  With flavors including Forbidden Fruit, Blood Orange, Pomegranate, Dark Berry and Midnight Lime you can’t go wrong.  While all the flavors are delectable I’d have to call the Blood Orange my favorite–I could eat them by the handful.

These dark, delicious morsels are a little bit sweet, a little bit tangy, and a whole lot of yummy. One thing that I always consider when trying multi-flavored candies is not only do they taste good alone but do they taste good in a dark movie theatre when I grab a random handful.  They complement each other beautifully and create a cornucopia of lovely flavors.  I dare say, I like them more than any other product Skittles has but out yet.

Whether you’re going to the movies or just going on a candy binge Skittles Darkside are a must-have.  Big “Yea!”

Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso

Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso are the best tasting line extension I’ve seen come out of Frito-Lay in many of years. This was a chip so delicious that I simply did not have the will power to stop stuffing the little rolled up tortilla chips in to my mouth. Judging by all of the Spanish on the bag (English was secondary on this product), these are being marketed to the ever-growing Latino demographic. That may be true, but they won over a pasty white boy with ease.

The flavor is a mix of nacho cheese, some spicy kick, and a tangy vinegar like finish that makes my mouth water just thinking about them. The heat was warm enough to clear out my sinuses, but was nowhere near the point of being ‘too much.’ Besides, if you’re buying a product with a label that says ‘Dinamita’ on it, you should expect to feel a little burn. Nacho Picoso’s are absolutely smothered in the powder that flavors them, and your fingers will be getting a temporary dye job from it. Fun to lick off though!

In a break from tradition, these Doritos are rolled into a tube-like shape. I really liked this as well, if for no other reason than it being unique and different (at least in the US). The corn chip has a nice crunch to it, and seems to resist breaking much better than the standard triangle variety. If Frito-Lay is smart, they’ll market Doritos Dinamita Nacho Picoso to the fullest extent, as this is an astounding snack food. Should you try these? ‘YEA!’ I can’t wait to get my hands on another bag.

Pretzel M&M

Much like nearly every other M&M variety, the latest brand extension of M&M (that I know of), Pretzel M&M’s are incredibly addicting. That mix of the sweet candied shell, milk chocolate, and salty pretzel center is a superb combination; one that I hope really takes hold and stays on the market. Sadly, I have been seeing their blue packaging less and less.

My gut feeling though is that Pretzel M&M’s will be hanging around awhile. Fans such as myself just need to put our money where our mouth is, or we face the potential of Pretzel M&M’s going the way of the dinosaur. We certainly have plenty of package sizes available to choose from, as I have seen then in all major sizes, even the really big resealable bags. Good thing, as I can see a family going through these rather quickly.

Only negative I could find with Pretzel M&M’s was a higher concentration of ‘cracked’ candies, which really is not that big of a deal. Chipped Pretzel M&M’S taste just as yummy as the whole ones. For the foreseeable future, as long as these stay on store shelves, I’ll be purchasing these over peanut M&M’s. Though I did not check the label for allergy information, I think these may be a suitable substitute for peanut allergy suffers who would like a sweet/salty snack. Overall, Pretzel M&M’s are a total WIN! ‘Yea!’

M&M’s Chocolate Bar

Nestle Crunch Peanut Butter Creme Girl Scouts Candy Bar

Today, the Consumer’s Corner completes the reviewing of the Holy Trinity of candy bar/cookie combinations, the Nestle Crunch Girl Scouts Candy Bars. Last, but not least by any means is the Peanut Butter Creme variety. Due to Kat’s unfortunate peanut allergy, the responsibility of testing this tasty treat was thrust upon me. A hardship, I know.

It has been years since I have sampled an actual Peanut Butter Creme Girl Scout cookie, so this review will be judging the Nestle Crunch Peanut Butter Creme Girl Scouts Candy Bar on its own merits, versus being a companion product like the previous reviews. What you’re getting in your package is basically a milk chocolate covered peanut butter wafer bar, much like a Nutter Butter. I think the picture above shows this.

So it’s not exactly a novel product in that respect, but it is still darn yummy. The Nestle Crunch Peanut Butter Creme Girl Scouts Candy Bar has a crunchy bite and then quickly dissolves into a creamy peanut buttery texture that will leave you craving ‘just one more’ bite. Or box for that matter.

Having sampled all three varieties, I’d place Peanut Butter Creme in second place. I enjoyed it more than the Thin Mint, but it fell just short of the Caramel & Coconut. All three are amazing products though, and all, including Nestle Crunch Peanut Butter Creme Girl Scouts Candy Bar, receive a very enthusiastic  ‘Yea!’

M&M’S Chocolate Bar

M&M’s. Chocolate bar. Seems like a logical combination, assuming you enjoy cocoa confections. I’m a huge fan of M&M’s, and will try any product they put on the market without hesitation. Never really been left disappointed, M&M is one of the most solid brands in the candy industry.

So this bar? I’m not sure. It really isn’t all that special. What you have is a milk chocolate candy bar, with M&M Mini’s dispersed throughout. The Mini’s really only add a bit of texture; the candy coating doesn’t really make an appearance in the flavor profile. The chocolate bar and M&M’s are not different enough to notice any contrast.

I think the product would have been better on a different type of bar. White chocolate perhaps? Or maybe use another variety of the famous M’s. I think the slightly saltier peanut-butter version would have been a much better choice, and would have left me with a lot better taste in my mouth. Or at least a lot more memorable taste.

Going with a ‘Meh’ for the M&M’S Chocolate Bar. There is not anything wrong with it, it’s just underwhelming. When I see that logo, I’ve come to expect greatness, and all I received was a mediocre chocolate bar. To top it off, this will most definitely melt in your hands. Sorry M&Ms!

Werther’s Original Sugar Free Caramel Cinnamon Hard Candies

Okay, let’s take a quick poll here. Do you love caramel? Yes! Do you love cinnamon? You do?! What about something that is flavored so closely to a cinnamon bun that texture is the differentiator?  Okay if you’re palate doesn’t mesh well with deliciousness stop reading here. Are you still with me? I would like to introduce Werther’s Original Sugar Free Caramel Cinnamon Hard Candies.  What a mouthful (and I’m not just talking about the name).  These individually wrapped hard candies fill your mouth with a soft cinnamon flavor that is more like a cinnamon sugar than a burn your mouth, make you cough straight-up cinnamon powder.  The classic caramel taste that Werther’s is known for has not been messed with whatsoever: mouth-watering, smooth and oh-so sweet.

But here’s the thing that usually scares people off, the magic words “sugar free.”  Many people believe these words are reserved for dieters and diabetics who are already assumed to have to sacrifice.  But put your worries aside, these tasty morsels are a far cry from the mainstream sugar-free odd tasting bunch of candies.  Had I been blindfolded I would have never guessed these little guys were sugar-free.

So, in conclusion, I am happy to report that these candies, whether you suck ‘em or chew ‘em, or are a highly praised “Yea!”

Ruffles Flame Grilled Steak Chips

A grilled slab of dead cow can be one of the most delicious, flavorful things one can eat. As a side dish, most steak eaters prefer having some form of potato, be it fried, baked, or mashed. The term ‘meat and potatoes’ didn’t just accidentally appear in our vernacular. Frito Lay has tried to take advantage of this, introducing a limited edition flavored Ruffles chip, ‘Flame Grilled Steak.’

Combining the flavors was solid logic, and I was easily convinced to grab them as an impulse buy. The delicious looking cut of beef on the bag reeled me in.  Upon opening the bag, I was greeted by powerful, but pleasant aroma of smoke. I was brought back to a happier time of grilling out with the family, instead of eating out of a box like I do now.

But, alas, my bubble went bust upon first bite. These reminded me more of a potato marinated in liquid smoke, then crinkle cut and fried up to be served to unsuspecting steak lovers. Sure, they’re edible, and I had no trouble downing the bag, but Ruffles Flame Grilled Steak chips probably won’t find their way into my cart again. Your results may vary. Solid ‘Meh.’

Thin Mint Girl Scouts Candy Bar

Girl Scout cookies on the go, anyone?  Yes, please!  The new limited edition Thin Mint Girl Scouts Candy Bars are convenient, enticing and oh-so delicious. I tried the Thin Mint inspired bar and fell in love (don’t tell my fiancée!)  Nestle has combined the gorgeous mint flavor with milky chocolate and the new Crunch element that makes me want to sing a Hallelujah Chorus.  I promise even the purist old-school Girl Scout cookie fan will enjoy this new twist on the classic cookie.  Do I sound a little over-enthused? Try one and you will be too, I dare you!

The bars are perfectly portioned and scored across the middle I’m assuming with the intention of being able to have a few bites now and save the rest for later.  But let me tell you, no Nestle Crunch Girl Scouts Candy Bar of mine will make it to a second serving.  The individually wrapped bars will leave you satisfied and binge-free.  Take it from me, the girl who can go through cookies like there’s no tomorrow, this is a good thing…a very good thing.

The only drawback as far as I’m concerned is that these babies are hard to find.  I scoured a Walgreens, Winn-Dixie and Walmart before aforementioned fiancée spotted a lone bar at our local CVS.  Hopefully with time these bars will become more and more popular  and they’ll be easier to find, because in my book, they are a definite “Yea!”
